comment:
Ratings do not measure customer satisfaction or reaction. The sour taste over the pitiful and insulting broadcast may spill over in consumer purchasing. The over-abundance of redundant commercials representing more than 33% of viewing time combined with the disrespectful and ignorant commentary and confusing editing are associated, consciously and subconsciously with "poor product." Companies paying for this broadcast of the Olympics may be shooting themselves in the foot.

gabby and the monkey

comment:
Anyone with a knowledge of US history would understand the poor juxtaposition of a grinning primate immediately following commentary about African-American girls following in the footsteps of a grinning female African american girl. Calling black people monkeys and apes is not so far in the past. The history of racism is not merely history, it is still very much real in many parts of the USA. One does not have to be racist to see how the association is feeding racism, one just needs to understand or have experienced racism. I suggest those denying the racist connection are denying the fact that racism is still alive and well.

That said, I think it is better to focus on Gabby and her accomplishments in spite of the distraction of controversy that has tainted these Olympics for many in the USA and as I know from reading, many around the world. Unfortunately, the NBC broadcast of the 2012 Olympics fails miserably, but the athletes do not.
